Mary Gertrude Seiberling Huhn, who lived in Berwyn, Pa., died Oct. 4, 2018. She was 98. Born in Akron, Ohio, on Sept. 20, 1920, Mary was the daughter of J. Frederick and Henrietta Buckler Seiberling, a co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. As the granddaughter of F.A. Seiberling, who founded Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., Mary lived her childhood on the iconic grounds of Stan Hywet Hall in Akron, Ohio. She graduated magna cum laude from Vassar College, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., in 1941 with an English degree. After a stint as a teacher at Maryland’s Garrison Forest School, she moved to New York City where she met her future husband, George A. Huhn V. The couple married in 1951. In 1960, they settled in Devon, Pa., at the historic “Cherry Cottage,” where they raised four children. She was an ardent activist, who took personal affront to injustice of any sort. She attended dozens of anti-war, pro-environmental and anti-nukes rallies in Washington, from the 1960s through the 2000s. Her final rally came in 2013 at age 92, when she marched at the nation’s capital with the Sierra Club to raise awareness on global warming. An avid gardener, nature and animal lover, media junkie and fan of fine art as well as all types of music, Mary was a member of the Main Line Unitarian Church, Devon, Pa., since the 1960s. Many of her efforts to better the world were in conjunction with MLUU. Of all of her many passions, Mary’s truest love was the written word. Her knowledge of literature -- specifically, poetry -- was unmatched. She could recite a fitting poem for any occasion, whether it be a wedding, a funeral or a tree in bloom. Even in her final days she was moved to quote her favorite works. Mary, who maintained a curiosity and wonderment of the universe, is survived by: her sister Dorothy Seiberling Steinberg, former art editor at Life; her four children, George F. Huhn (Julie Brewer), Curtis Huhn (Cheryl Lynne Huhn), Mary Huhn (Jim Rich) and William Huhn (Julia Hines Huhn); along with eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, her brother Representative John F. Seiberling and her grandson Leon Huhn. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the B+ Foundation: A Children’s Cancer Charity; the Sierra Club; or the Old Trail School, Bath, Ohio, in Mary’s name. A celebration of her life will be held at the Main Line Unitarian Church on Dec. 1 at 2:30.
